Good to know

Physiotherapy can start after brain surgery, once your doctor gives clearance, or after discharge from hospital. The sooner it starts, the better the chance of returning to normal life and the better the patient’s quality of life.

If someone who has had a stroke suddenly gets worse — weakness, walking difficulty, slurred speech, facial droop or numbness on one side — it may be a new stroke. See a doctor immediately.

Questions about this service

When should rehab start after a stroke?

As soon as the doctor gives clearance, or after discharge from hospital. The sooner it starts, the better the chance of getting back to daily life.

Can we do rehab at home if the patient cannot walk yet?

Yes. We start with practice in bed — rolling, sitting up and standing — then move on to walking around the home as the patient is ready.

How can the family help?

The physiotherapist teaches carers how to support and transfer the patient safely, plus simple exercises to continue between visits, so practice stays regular and safe.
